Colorless – Album by Quitting Heaven

I wrote the Quitting Heaven album entitled Colorless in 2010 after a very close, female friend fell into a battle with depression and drugs.  I watched her crumble, fall and die and there was nothing I could do…as much as I tried.  Facing my failure I searched for a release and Colorless was the result.

Instead of being literal, I decided to build a fantasy story around the entire situation…and this is the original, un-edited story I created.

Colorless…

“They called her Christy. She was a victim…a casualty of years of wrong choices, wrong friends and ultimately, the wrong injection. The coma she fell into was extremely deep, devoid of any outside stimuli. She didn’t even know if she was alive or dead. But she could dream…a beautiful dream of a world filled with unexplored forests, trees and creatures of nature. This was her sanctuary, her heaven, and a place away from her past reality of a world where pain and despair reigned supreme.

But within the eternal escape of her dreams…just beyond the edge of the forest, lurked…something. Something ugly and deformed…with sharp, rotten teeth. Watching, waiting, but never intruding upon her peace. So she lived with this stranger who remained just outside of her realm, for what seemed to be months…until one day.

The creature crept into her area of this world, and as it entered, all the colors drained from view in it’s wake, leaving a dark gray void behind him. Even the flowers and the creatures he passed withered and deformed into hideous beasts…crazy and insane with anger…and they learned how to bite. She ran to escape the creature which slowly approached. Then, suddenly…the creature abandoned its pursuit, and returned to the outskirts of this land, allowing it again to beautify. More and more often though, the beast would attempt to approach her, draining the color from her world and ultimately retreating as she eluded him.

Unable to bear this loss of her peaceful sanctuary, she decided that the beast must somehow…be erased..or destroyed. And she hatched her plan. The next time, as the creature approached her again…she did not run…but smiled, and bent her finger, inviting the hulking monster to come closer. Moving away, keeping her distance, she lured the beast up a nearby hill from which she used to watch the animals play in the field. The beast, standing at the top of the hill was looking around, unable to find the girl. Then suddenly, from behind a tree, she sprang and pushed the creature as hard as she could, off the edge of the cliff, and down to the forest floor below.

She walked down and cautiously approached the ugly beast which now lay dying in a puddle of red blood upon the grass. But to her surprise, the hideous creature began changing, transforming from a grotesque figure into something…something beautiful…as the forest around her continued to turn dark. This is when she realized the horror of her mistake. For you see…the creature was not stealing the color from her world as it entered. The color belonged to the creature, and he had willingly given it unto this normally gray world to make this girl, that he has grown to love, happy. Now in the last throws of his life, the color began returning to him, and the dim lit world around her slowly returned to it’s natural state.

As the creature, now so beautiful, slowly passed…all the colors of this world began to die with the beast…and the forest reverted to it’s dark and grotesque state. Her dream world was now as as dead as the beast and as vacant as her reality, leaving her without her “Wonderland”. After a few moments of tears and reflection, the girl again ascended the hill. And looking down, over the edge of the cliff at the beast lying below, decided to fly away…falling through the air, and landing dead upon the beast below…their blood intermixing…never to awaken again.

In the hospital…family and friends stood sadly by, as the lights on the machines that kept her alive, slowly faded away.”

So there it is.  You can experience the album for FREE or download the album at QuittingHeaven.com where I have created an app of sorts to present the album song by song along with story sections.  It is actually pretty cool.
